Funds will build a new Super Theatre
Volunteers are needed to help run a new pop-up shop, opening soon at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (RD&E).
The shop is being set up in the hospital’s foyer by Royal Devon Hospitals Charity (RDHC) in support of its new Super Theatre Appeal.
It will stock everyday essentials for patients and visitors, including newspapers, books and puzzles, as well as snacks, drinks and fresh fruit. There will also be a range of charity merchandise available to buy.
RDHC Assistant Fundraiser, Tom Darby-Clark, said: “Volunteering is a super way to support your local NHS and make a real difference to patients and families across Devon.
“We’re looking for people over the age of 16 who’d like to support the running of our new pop-up shop by welcoming and serving customers, assisting with stock displays and helping to promote the charity and our Super Theatre Appeal.
“Volunteering is also a great way to meet new people and learn new skills; even an hour every couple of weeks could be a huge help.”
All proceeds from the shop will go to the hospital charity’s £1.4m fundraising appeal to purchase equipment for a new state-of-the-art ‘super theatre’ being built at the RD&E.
The new ultra-modern operating theatre will reduce the need for open surgery, multiple procedures and for patients to travel out of area for complex operations. It will mean a reduced risk of complications, faster recovery times after surgery, and less time in hospital.
An additional theatre at the RD&E will enable the hospital to treat around 1,200 extra patients each year, reducing waiting times for everyone, including cancer and urgent surgery patients.
