Musicians in Devon and Cornwall have a greater chance of getting their tracks on air, after Radio Exe launched a new programme on its sister station Devoncast Radio, together with a podcast version

South West Sounds showcases talent from across the region, and is hosted by an up-and-coming new presenter from Cornwall.

Jori Aylett, 18, from St Kew studies performance arts at Bodmin College and is an accomplished musician, songwriter and actor. Under his pseudonym of HippieKid he writes and produces neo-grime and garage tracks.

In the first edition, Jori gives radio airtime to three local acts:

•    Tilly Jones from Bodmin, performing her own song ‘Higher’
•    Exeter-based rapper Skaa, whose track ‘An Tuar’ means ‘prophet’ in Gaelic
•    The Eco-mods, a rock band from Delabole with two tracks, ‘Control’ and ‘Rebels Road’

Jori also performs one of his own songs, Parma Violets, which he describes as a mish-mash of his favorite punchlines and flows.

About his new show, Jori says: “I was filming the video to a song in London when the director introduced me to the manager of Radio Exe, and I followed the meeting up quickly to say I was interested in doing a new music show. He said he would listen if I made a pilot. I did. And now we’re on air, providing opportunities for local musicians to reach a wider audience.

“I’m also learning so much as a presenter, and I’d encourage anyone who has an interest in keeping the south west music scene vibrant, to provide construct feedback and let me hear their tracks or see them perform.”

Radio Exe managing director Paul Nero says: "Jori's passion for performance, philosophy and poetry is as notable as his love for music. With this programme, he's made a great start to his broadcast career, and he'll be getting out and about watching more acts in the months ahead to inform his show."

As well as being available of DAB digital radio, South West Sounds can be heard on the Radio Exe app (choose Devoncast Radio under ‘select station), though smart speakers (for example, ask Alexa to ‘Play Devoncast Radio’) and at www.devoncastradio.co.uk.

To submit a track for consideration, email joriaylett@gmail.com Performers must be based in Devon or Cornwall, and original works suitable for broadcast radio.
