Tories suffer blues, red alert and yellow peril

25 minutes | Saturday, 6 May 2023

Devon’s political map is completely different this weekend to last. We discuss the winners and losers on Devoncast.

As with the national picture, the Tories endured an election they would probably rather forget, losing control of three Devon councils and shedding seats on nine of the 10 up for election.

However, they did win a surpise majority on Torbay Council, replacing an Lib Dem – Independent coaltion. We look into why that might have happened.

The big winners across Devon were the Liberal Democrats. Ollie Heptinstall, Rob Kershaw and Philip Churm unpick the party’s victories in North Devon, South Hams, Mid Devon and Teignbridge.

Meanwhile, Labour is now in charge of both of our cities again. Little changed in Exeter – already a Labour stronghold – but the party’s victory in Plymouth made national headlines. What was behind their success?

We then look at what the results tell us ahead of next year’s likely general election and how the parties are placed across Devon.
