Union calls on public to fight fire service funding cut

The fire brigades union is calling on Devon residents to make their voices heard in the public consultation on funding cuts to the local fire and rescue service.

The service is having to find ways of saving five and a half million pounds worth of savings over the next two years, after receiving a lower-than-expected Government grant.

Although the proposals don't involve fire station closures or compulsory redundancies, they mean some fire appliances will be staffed by on-call firefighters.

The fire service says the alternative would be a rise in council tax.
