Radio Exe's breakfast presenter isn't impressed

Two more celebrities have received honorary awards from Devon's universities.

Comedian Josh Widdecombe received an honorary doctorate from the University of Exeter whilst Will Young was awarded an honorary degree. In 2022, Stormzy was given an honorary degree from the university.

Now, Blur's Damon Albarn has been given an honorary degree in "recognition of his creativity, innovation and commitment to environmental causes."

Albarn has become a doctor of letters, and the 'charmless man' told 'girls and boys' graduating that receiving the award was one up on the last time he visited the city, which was to get his driving theory certificate.

The University of Plymouth has also jumped on the bandwagon of PR stunts - Strictly Come Dancing judge Dame Darcey Bussell has been given an honorary doctorate of arts.

A spokesperson for the university said the award was given in recognition of her "outstanding contribution" to dance and performance.

Radio Exe's breakfast presenter Matt Rogers said: "It's very disappointing and I expected better from local universities.

"My contributions to important research on behalf of MattGov deserve to be recognised. If universities aren't willing to give me an honorary doctorate, I will be forced to set up the University of Matt Rogers and award one to myself."
