
Peter Smith, 79, was walking dog near A38
The man killed when a wheel of a passing trailer hit him whilst he walked his dog near Heathfield, Newton Abbot on Tuesday has been named.
Peter Smith, 79, died at the scene. His next-of-kin are continuing to be supported by a family liaison officer. Mr Smith's dog was found nearby and is now safe and well with the family.
Police say that around 10.25am on Tuesday 1 September, a livestock trailer being towed by a Mitsubishi L200 lost a wheel which then collided with Mr Smith.
His family have paid the following tribute: “Peter was a caring and devoted dad, grandad, friend and dog-lover. Peter will leave a void in everyone’s life whom had the pleasure of knowing him.
“Matthew, Samantha and family would like to express their thanks to everyone for their continuing support during this unexpected time, especially to Devon and Cornwall Police for all they have done and are continuing to do.”
The A38 was closed for a number of hours whilst emergency services attended the scene.
Police are continuing to appeal for any witnesses of the collision to contact them on 101, quoting log 261 of 1 September 2020.
