Brixham voters want to stay part of Torbay

Most people in Brixham don’t want to leave Torbay Council’s jurisdiction, according to a poll which attracted a notably small number of responses. The town’s residents pay more council tax than those in Torquay in Paignton, and the authority has been criticised recently, particularly after the closure of Brixham Road affected local traders and the fish market.

Fewer than five per cent of eligible voters took part in the poll which asked two questions – whether people wanted Brixham to leave Torbay Council, and whether they felt they would be better served by South Hams District Council. Just over half of respondents didn’t want to disassociate from Torbay Council, with the same proportion – 54 per cent – saying that they didn’t want to become part of the South Hams.

The poll has cost around £15,000, which Brixham Town Council will cover. It took place less than a month before May’s local elections, in which all Torbay Council seats are being contested.
