They say it will be good value for money

Teignbridge Council is poised to pledge a million pounds towards a long-awaited new road on the outskirts of Newton Abbot.

The money will come from developers, who pay into a Community Infrastructure Levy when they build new homes or businesses.

The full council is expected to rubber-stamp the funding when it meets on Tuesday. It will go towards its high-priority new A382 pedestrian, cyclist and vehicle link road between Newton Abbot and Drumbridges roundabout at Heathfield.

The first phase, between Forches Cross and Whitehill Cross, was completed in 2021 and at that time Teignbridge made a £5.1 million CIL contribution towards works with a total value of £13.2 million.

Devon County Council has secured £38.12 million from the government to upgrade the rest of the route between Drumbridges and Newton Abbot, and work is expected to start next year.

Teignbridge’s contribution amounts to just over three per cent of the total cost, which the council says is “relatively modest” and will help to unlock far greater investment in the area.

A report says: “It represents good value for money and an important opportunity to help leverage significant investment in our local infrastructure.”
