Primary years get brushing Boost

Primary school children across Devon are getting lessons on how to brush their teeth.

A supervised scheme for 3-5-year-olds called The Big Brush Club has been expanded to primary schools after successful pilots in Plymouth and Torbay.

Devon is the first area in the southwest to offer the programme to more age groups.

NHS Devon is funding it along with several local councils and aims to combat a rise in tooth decay seen in over 5s.

Teachers will spend 5 minutes a day holding supervised sessions, as well as lessons on self-care, healthy eating, and sugar reduction.

Chief Operations Officer from At Home Dental, Hayley Beaumont, said:

“Each child is given a toothbrush and toothpaste pack to take home, encouraging toothbrushing to be a part of their normal daily routine.

“The children love doing it with their friends and the teachers report that it not only reduces problems with teeth but also school absence.

The scheme is now being rolled out to all Devon primary schools with early years nursery, pre-school or reception class provision.
