Ruling due in nurse's crucifix hearing

The European Court of Human Rights is due to deliver its ruling today in the case of an Exeter nurse who was refused permission to wear a crucifix to work.

In 2009 Shirley Chaplin was told by the Royal Devon and Exeter Foundation NHS Trust that her necklace breached health and safety guidelines when worn with the new-style uniform tunics because a patient could have grabbed it,

She was told she could wear it under her tunic but felt she was being put under pressure to hide her Christian faith.

As a result she was taken off front-line duties and took early retirement.. she's claiming religious discrimination.
