Programmes affected for 16 hours
Devon's commercial station Radio Exe was taken off air by a major power outage near its Exeter studios overnight on Wednesday
The lights - and the sound - went out in the Manaton Close area of Matford Business Park at Marsh Barton around 7 p.m. on Wedesday evening. Through the evening and overnight a non-stop music service was been played from the station's transmitter at St. Thomas in Exeter.
Western Power began work on the issue around 1 a.m. on Thursday, with power restored just after 11 a.m.
It provided an opportunity for station apprentice Jamie Taylor to broadcast his first weekday lunchtime show until drive time presenter Ashley Jeary's usual programme began at 3 p.m.
Managing director Paul Nero says: "Other stations are sometimes criticised for playing a narrow range of music over and over again. Because of the exceptional circumstances, we were doing the same for 14 hours and counting. It took some time for normal service to be repaired. There's only so many times I want to hear 'Happy' when I'm far from."
