One officer in Exeter says they stopped at least 400 cars
Police officers in Devon are setting up checkpoints on roads, as they urge the public to stick to travel restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic.
One in Exeter said they stopped at least 400 cars this morning [26 March] and most were not for essential travel.
Police were also on the main Alphington Road route into the city, to see if drivers had a valid reason for their journeys.
Under new rules announced on Monday, people can now only leave home for shopping, for one form of exercise a day, for a medical appointment or to help a vulnerable person. They can also go to work, but only if absolutely necessary.
In Torquay, The Alliance Roads team says plenty are complying but many are still taking needless journeys, including someone driving to a garage to discuss a future MOT.
