Driver questioned about drugs-driving

A man in his thirties from Exeter has life-changing injuries after being hit by a van in Okehampton.

The casualty, who was walking outside Okehampton Medical Centre on East Street in the town, was airlifted to Derriford Hospital following the collision on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services were called around 2.25pm.

A man in his forties from Chichester who was driving a Mercedes Sprinter van was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs. He has been released on bail until October pending further enquiries.

The road was closed until around 8pm to allow officers to investigate the scene and for the recovery of the vehicle.

Police are asking for any witnesses to contact them by calling 101. They are particularly keen to hear from anyone with relevant dashcam or CCTV.
