No covid deaths in region in a week

By Daniel Clark, local democracy reporter

First time since crisis began

No deaths related to coronavirus were recorded across Devon and Cornwall in the latest week of information from the Office for National Statistics, for the week ending July 31. The figures relate to deaths in which Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate were registered in that time, rather than the date of death itself.

One backdated death relating to a care home in Mid Devon has been added to the statistics for the week ending July 17.

At the height of the crisis, 107 deaths were recorded in a week across the two counties.

The Isles of Scilly has still yet to see a covid-19-related death and the South Hams have now gone 11 weeks, North Devon ten weeks, Torridge nine weeks, Torbay eight weeks, Exeter and Teignbridge have gone seven weeks, East Devon five weeks, and West Devon and Cornwall three weeks, Mid Devon two weeks, and Plymouth one week without a death.

Previous weeks have seen 1, 1, 2, 5, 1, 7, 10, 11, 15, 38, 44, 69, 84, 107, 89, 60, 16, and nine deaths registered.

The figures show in which local authority the deceased’s usual place of residence was. For instance, if someone may have died in Derriford Hospital but lived in West Devon, while the death may have been registered in Plymouth, their death would be recorded in the mortality statistics for the ONS figures in West Devon.

In total, 571 deaths from coronavirus have been registered across Devon and Cornwall, with 305 in hospitals, 222 in care homes, 43 at home, and one in a hospice.

Of the deaths, 208 have been registered in Cornwall, 91 in Plymouth, 58 in Torbay, 49 in East Devon, 39 in Exeter, 33 in Teignbridge, 26 in North Devon, 20 in Torridge, 18 in Mid Devon, 17 in West Devon, 12 in the South Hams, and none in the Isles of Scilly.
