Call for traffic restrictions amid claims larger vehicles are “getting stuck”

Residents of a Devon community are calling for traffic restrictions amid claims some vehicles are “getting stuck” along narrow lanes.

County councillor Martin Wrigley (Lib Dem) presented a petition on behalf of people in Penfield Gardens, Frederick Terrace and Hoopern Terrace in

Dawlish at the authority’s ruling cabinet this week.

Describing them as a “narrow set of streets off the old section of Dawlish,” he said: “For six years, we have been getting delivery trucks –

Sainsbury’s, Tesco, other supermarkets vehicles – getting stuck because the road is essentially too narrow.

“They have been asking for road restriction signs, in terms of width restriction signs, which have been repeatedly refused, despite the fact that it does pass under three of the five categories required to actually meet the conditions for those signs.

“It’s a small petition,” Cllr Wrigley added. “It’s a small road. It’s a small community there. But they need restrictions on the width of the vehicles please.”

He then presented the petition to the council’s Conservative leader John Hart.

A spokesperson for Devon County Council said: “We will respond to the author of the petition within 15 working days of receipt.”
