Multiple fire crews tackle thatch house blaze

Residents advised to close windows

25 fire crews from across Devon have assisted with a blaze on a thatched roof of a property in Drewsteighton in West Devon. 

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue were called to the village just after eight o'clock in the evening of Monday 18 March.

Eight crews from around the county were immediately sent to the scene and used an aerial ladder platform, command units and a water bowser. 

A spokesperson from the fire servcie said: "the thatch roof was well alight... and requested for a further two appliances, which was then increased for a further four to attend bringing the total to 14 as well as an environmental protection unit."

25 stations from around Devon were at the scene at the zenith of the fire. 

Nine engines were at the scene at 4am this morning [Tuesday 8 March] as a "relief strategy" was in place. 

Residents in the village have been told to close their windows and doors to protect themselves from the smoke.
