    Man rescued after estuary fall

An elderly man became stuck in mud at Kingsbridge

The air ambulance has landed in South Devon, after an elderly man is believed to have fallen 18 feet onto an estuary embankment.

Fire crews say he became stuck in mud at Kingsbridge following the fall this lunchtime just after 2pm [28 January] before being rescued.

The man was then handed over to ambulance staff for treatment. His condition is unknown.

In a statement, Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue said they " One fire engine from Kingsbridge as well as water safety equipment from Camels Head and an Environmental Protection Unit from Newton Abbot were mobilised. The Coastguard were also mobilised to this incident.

"Fire crews confirmed one elderly male stuck in mud approximately eighteen foot down from the estuary embankment [...] and rescued the male using dry suits, wading poles and a ladder for access."

"The male was handed over to the Ambulance for treatment.  The Coastguard teams were then stood down."
