Smyths toys will occupy the rest
Planning permission has already been granted for the larger unit at the retail park to become Smyths Toys, and works to convert the inside have already begun.
Now plans have been submitted to change the use of the smaller unit, occupied previously by Babies R US, to become a gym, occupied by PureGym.
A planning statement submitted by PureGym to Exeter City Council planners says: “The change of us will enable the application site to be occupied by PureGym, the UK’s largest gym group which provides access to high quality fitness facilities on an affordable and flexible basis.
“PureGym is the UK’s leading gym group with over 230 sites and 1 million members throughout the UK. There is already an existing PureGym within Exeter City Centre at Fore Street and the applicant company provides access to high quality gym facilities on an affordable and flexible basis.
“The proposed gym at Bishops Court will comprise a main gym area, studio, free weights area, spin area and functional zone. In addition, changing facilities and showers will be provided, as well as a small seating area for the use of members, and staff facilities.
“In total, with the addition of the mezzanine floor, the gym will provide 1,384 sq. m of floorspace and these facilities are intended to serve the substantial employment areas to the west of the M5, as well as residents to the east of Exeter.”
It adds: “Every gym provides an excellent range of fitness equipment and machinery, and offers a range of classes and other services such as personal training. Gyms operate on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week, providing access to the whole community including those who work irregular shift patterns.
Calling for planning permission to be granted, the statement concludes: “The proposed development will accord with the provisions of the National Planning Policy Framework and deliver sustainable development that provides a range of economic and social benefits. It has also been demonstrated that there are no available and suitable sites in sequentially preferable locations.
“It will create up to 15 jobs, promote healthier lifestyles and support the reduction of health inequalities by expanding the provision of affordable and flexible fitness facilities within this part of Exeter.”
The planning application also seeks planning permission for minor external alterations to provide new entrance doors to the front elevation and a new fire exit to the rear elevation.
Exeter City Council planners will determine the fate of the application at a later date.
Smyths Toys are due to open early in 2019 and have begun advertising for staff.
