Future of council-run day centres under review

A review of the day centres run by Devon county council could lead to some of them closing, if their services can be provided by other facilities nearby. But other day centres could be modernised and improved.

Councillors are hearing today that the review will look at the use of day centres over the next few months, and explore the other facilities near them.

Attendance has fallen by about two thirds since 2005 as many people choose to use money allocated by the council to get support in different ways, using clubs or community groups.

The council says it wants to make sure its services reflect people's wishes and needs, but is emphasising that no-one with eligible needs will be left without support.

It'll be working with voluntary groups and the private sector to develop the services in some areas.. and says the staff and users of day centres will also be consulted.
