Exeter City Council given £200,000 by the government
Residents in Exeter struggling to pay council tax are set to receive support.
The government has a £100 million council tax support fund which it distributes to county, district and city councils. Exeter City Council has been allocated just under a £200,000 from it to support people who are behind on council tax.
The council can give up to £25 to people in this financial year, but anyone who is behind by less than £25 will receive whatever they owe.
Councillors at an executive meeting on Wednesday said they are “proud” to be providing support to residents, unanimously approving a recommendation for the full council to consider later.
Exeter recently increased its council tax ahead of this financial year by just over £7 a year, meaning the average Band D household now pays just shy of £180 per year to the city council.
