Match Report: Exeter City 0-2 Northampton Town
Exeter shocked many by beating Premier League side Luton Town on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup and hoped to take their form into their next game. They hosted newly promoted Northampton Town at St James Park.
With the game full of action, it wasn’t Exeter’s day. The visitors took all three points and won by two goals, courtesy of Northampton Town’s Sam Hoskins and Patrick Brough.
Both teams had their chances, but Exeter couldn’t take advantage of them, often losing the ball in the final third. Northampton's dominant pressure thwarted any opportunities for the Grecians.
The game was evenly poised until Northampton’s left winger Hoskins timed his run to perfection and split the Exeter defence. He calmly slotted his shot past the outstretched City goalkeeper of Viljami Sinisalo.
Exeter tried to react fast to this setback; every chance they created came to nothing. Despite dominating possession, Exeter couldn’t get past Northampton’s indefatigable backline. They broke down anything that was a threat to a goal.
Exeter tried to fight back, but their defence saw a three-against-two situation where Northampton came out on top in added time. This led to their left-back scoring and putting the nail in the coffin. Many City supporters left after that goal went in because there was no coming back for the Grecians.
As the full-time whistle went, over 6,000 Grecian fans left very disappointed. Exeter’s record against Northampton is even gloomier; they haven’t beaten them in over four years.
Exeter face Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night, looking to bounce back.
