City suffer another defeat

Exeter's losing streak continues

Exeter have now suffered five straight losses in the league, following a defeat against Wigan Athletic.

It wasn’t Exeter’s day, with misplaced passes in the final third and struggling to take their chances. When there were chances, the Wigan defensive line was solid, putting their bodies on the line to make block after block.

From the start, it seemed that Wigan wouldn’t go down without a fourth pressing forced after their high Exeter to either pass back or lose possession. Exeter couldn’t meet Wigan's standard of pressing, with right-winger Stephen Humphrys beating Exeter's defender Pierce Sweeny’s press and managing to break away , then squaring the ball to Godo for the first goal. 

Exeter found themselves behind after eight minutes and tried to make amends, but it wasn’t to be. 

Despite dominating in possession, nothing was done of it, and nothing came from any of their 17 corners and 16 free kicks. Despite racking up 30 recorded shots, none were converted. 

Exeter were looking to come close after striker Yanic Wildschut came on the pitch and looked lethal on the left, hitting the post and blocking shots.

This then led to Wigan’s Jones breaking down on their left, cutting in past Sweeney, sending in a cross into the box for only it to be met by Exeter’s captain Aimson for it to go into his net. Exeter goalkeeper Viljami Sinasalo could stand and watch as the ball went in. The Wigan fans let out a rapturous cheer, knowing they had Thwarted any chances of Exeter gaining at least a draw out of the game. 

However, it wasn’t all good news for Wigan fans, as England and Manchester United superstar Sir Bobby Charlton had passed away aged 86. Charlton had taken over as caretaker manager of Wigan in 1983 before becoming a director for Wigan.

With the Exeter faithful disappointed, they hope to get back to winning ways as they next take on Derby County under the Tuesday night lights at Pride Park.
