Devon football - weekend preview

Devon teams back this weekend

With the transfer window coming to an end next week, teams have just days to sign or sell players.

With Exeter City striker Sam Nombe rumoured to be leaving the club to join League One competitors Barnsley for £1 million, they have until Friday to find a replacement for the Grecians’ star striker.

Today Exeter take on ex-Premier League and recently relegated (from the Championship) Reading side in what could be Nombe’s last game for the club. City look to remain in the top half of the table and this will be the first time the two teams have faced each other in a professional game since 1994.

Plymouth Argyle started life in their new league with a win over Huddersfield Town but couldn’t keep the victories going as they went into a goalless draw with Watford before losing to relegated Southampton as Saints striker Che Adams scored a late winner, despite numerous saves from new goalkeeper Conor Hazard.

The Pilgrims travel to the Midlands as they take on Birmingham City. Former Exeter City striker Jay Stansfield has just joined Birmingham on a loan from Fulham, he played Argyle twice last season for Exeter and assisted two in Argyle’s 4-2 win over their fierce Devon rivals on Halloween.

Torquay United started in their new league of the National League South in the worst way possible starting off with a 2-2 draw with Dover Athletic after being two goals up, then losing 0-3 to Worthing. The Gulls found their form again as they beat Chippenham Town 2-2 and then St Albans 0-1.

They now face Slough Town hoping to keep their form up and get a win streak going in search of getting back into the National League.
