The Grecians lose to League One side Wycombe
Wycombe Wanderers have knocked Exeter City out of the Carabao Cup in a match that was decided on penalties.
There was a good turnout for the match with 2,225 spectators, 191 of them making the lengthy trip from Buckinghamshire.
Wycombe Wanderers were the stronger team in the opening minutes. An early chance for the travelling team was quickly saved by Cameron Dawson. Five minutes later, Cameron Dawson makes another excellent save.
Jack Sparkes had a free-kick early on after a foul was committed by Wycombe. It wasn't to be though, as David Stockdale saved the ball.
It's fair to say that Wycombe's fans were loud and proud and nothing could stop the blue army's one-man orchestra. The constant drumming became too much for their own supporters at one point - with one fan shouting at the drummer from the adjacent stand to tone it down.
Exeter City had a few great chances, and one came in the 33 minute for Pierce Sweeney, but it was wasted when he passed it too quickly - going through Jack Sparkes' legs.
The first half was slow and nothing really happened until the end. The Wycombe fans clearly had no idea where they were as they were chanting "is this a library" from the away stand.
Seven-minutes to half time and the match was stopped as Wycombe's Alex Samuel went down in City's six yard box requiring some lengthy treatment. Three-minutes later and the game is resumed with Samuel back on the pitch - the City fans in the Big Bank weren't happy about the wasted minutes.
There was nearly extra time on extra time in the first half. Wanderers' Matthew Bloomfield was taken off after being on the receiving end of his own teammates boot. Oli Pendlebury came on for Bloomfield and City's Jack Sparkes took a hit to the head thirty-seconds later.
There were two substitutions made for Wycombe at half-time. Jason McCarthy and Daryl Hogan came on for Curtis Thompson and Jordan Obita.
The tempo was turned up in the second half, which made for a thrilling experience. Wycombe's Mehmeti was booked for denying a quick free-kick before City won a corner.
Wycombe's Anis Mehmeti thought he was clever, showing off by keeping possession of the ball. It's a shame his striking skills aren't as good as keeping possession as his attempt for goal ended up going outside of St James Park.
11-minutes from the final whislte, Jack Sparkes was given a yellow for a clip on KaiKai.
The away side went down to 10 men towards the end of the match, but that didn't stop them trying.
Four-minutes of extra time was added and City had a final chance in the 92 minute. Dissapointment came for the Grecians as the attempt to go 1-0 was well saved by David Stockdale.
The game went to penalties, with Pierce Sweeney, Ben Seymour and Jevani Brown scoring. That wasn't enough as Wycombe's Horgan, Mehmeti, Pendlebury and even goalkeeper David Stockdale scored.
The final score on penalties was Exeter 3, Wycombe Wanders 4.
